ASSEN ALLADIN AND ALISHA ALIBHAI
Table 2 displays the mean scores and standard deviations on the
BDI-II, the BAI, and the BHS for CH and CBT treatment groups at
baseline, during treatment, and at follow-ups. Lower values on the
three scales indicate less depression, anxiety, and feelings of hopeless-
ness. The mean measurement changes over the treatment weeks and
follow-ups for the two groups are depicted in Figure 1.
The ANOVA results indicated that there were no significant differ-
ences between participants in either the CH or the CBT treatment
groups on any of the three dependent measures at baseline (see Table 3).
At the termination of treatment (Week 16), paired samples
t
tests
revealed that participants in the CH group had significantly lower values
on the BDI-II,
t
(41) = 15.9,
p
< .001; the BAI,
t
(41) = 12.2,
p
< .001; and the
BHS,
t
(41) = 12.4,
p
< .001, compared to baseline scores. Participants in the
CBT group also displayed significant improvement compared to baseline
scores on the three measures: BDI-II,
t
(41) = 14.5,
p
< .001; BAI,
t
(41) =
13.0,
p
< .001; and BHS,
t
(41) = 13.3,
p
< .001. A comparison between both
treatment groups revealed that the CH group displayed significantly
larger changes in their scores from baseline (Week 1) to termination of
Figure 1.
Changes in BDI-II, BAI, and BHS mean scores over time for CH and CBT groups.
Note. Week 1, Week 42, and Week 68 represent baseline, 6-month and 12-month mean scores. CH
= Cognitive Hypnotherapy; CBT = Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy; BDI-II = Beck Depres-
sion Inventory II; BAI = Beck Anxiety Index; BHS = Beck Hopelessness Scale.
