these items are
.19,
-28, .49, and .26 respectively. These items measure
passive motor suggestibility.
A
factor analysis by Evans (1966) dem-
onstrated that the Fly Hallucination, as administered in this scale,
also belongs to this cluster
of
items.
These results are clarified in Table
4
in which two scores are derived,
each
from
4
items, measuring passive motor (primary) suggestibility
and challenge suggestibility. Even though
Ss
were divided into levels
of susceptibility on the basis of total HGSHS:A scores, the passive
suggestion cluster does not significantly discriminate high and medium
Ss
( t
=
.70).
The low group is significantly lower than the high and
medium groups
( p
<
.001;
p
<
.001). The mean total score
of
the low
group
of
2.60 includes an average
of
2.10
of
these passive items passed,
but only .15 challenge items passed. The differences between high
vs.
medium, and medium vs. low groups on the cluster
of
challenge items
are both significant
( p
<
.001;
p
<
.001).
The challenge suggestions discriminate between susceptibility levels
quite well. The two clusters
of
passive and challenge suggestions corre-
late only .23
( p
<
.05; one-tail test).
Item Discrimination between Groups on
SHSS
:
C. A similar analysis
of
SHSS:C is summarized in Table
3.
To what extent does the sub-
group assignment on one scale accurately predict subgroup member-
ship on a subsequent scale? This
is
partly determined by the correla-
tion between the
two
scales (in this case only a moderate .59), and
partly related to the nature
of
the items in SHSS
:
C.
As
in HGSHS:
A,
the passive suggestibility items do not discrimi-
nate between high and medium subgroups. As in HGSHS:A, the chal-
lenge suggestibility items discriminate between the three groups sig-
nificantly, and
in
the expected order. Combining the two relevant items,
